Investing for success: analyse, agree, action

London – 26 September

Leeds – 2 October

A lot can happen in a year in the pensions world and the last 12 months was no exception. 2018 saw some of the worst returns and most volatile markets for a decade. As we look to the future, pension schemes are offered little respite as volatility is likely to persist. Given these challenges, how can you invest for success?

With so many different investment options available, how do you determine the best and most appropriate investment strategy given your scheme’s unique situation and identify ways to implement successfully? There are lots of things to consider depending on where you are on your funding journey, what you are looking to achieve and how well prepared you are towards your end-game.

Join us for this free half day conference where we’ll look at the latest ideas and best thinking within investment. We’ll discuss how you might go about considering these areas and the actions you might want to take. It is open to anyone involved with the management of DB pension schemes so please feel free to share the invitation.

Investing and covenant

How does investment strategy change when a scheme’s covenant takes a turn for the worse? How should trustees approach investment strategy setting? What impact does the funding level have? This session will look at an example of Integrated Risk Management (IRM) in practice.

Inputting investment into your schemes long-term funding target

Recent regulation changes now requires trustees and sponsors to recognise and put in place a long-term funding target for their plans. In this session, we examine what our clients are doing to meet this demand and consider how factors such as your scheme’s maturity and liquidity profile can influence the journey planning process.

In addition, we will look at various investment strategy considerations to ensure your assets are transaction-ready when needed, in order to get the most attractive pricing from insurers.

Responsible Investing – The new normal

Over the past 18 months, responsible investment has moved from an outlier to a mainstay of the pensions industry. The concept is now being incorporated across asset classes and strategies, such as factor investing.

In this session, we look at the practicalities of integrating ESG and the key issues trustees may engage with and adopt as the responsible investment space continues to evolve.

Niche thinking: Fireside chats

Achieving stable and efficient returns is one of the biggest responsibilities facing pension schemes today. Meeting this task is no mean feat so trustees are on the hunt for investments with strong risk return profiles that also provide new and diversified sources of return.

In this session, we look at three niche investment ideas which can offer uncorrelated returns to your portfolio.

Cyber risk is often most closely associated with threats to member data and GDPR consequences, but can also create risks to assets. In this session we explore some of the cyber risks in the asset chain, the consequences of those risks, and what schemes can do to mitigate them.

Vanessa-Jane Jaeger, Aon and Paul McGlone, Aon

Championing investment costs for our clients

Trustees have historically faced major challenges in obtaining the asset management costs they incur for their scheme, particularly on a consistent and standardised basis.

However proposed remedies are now available for use, enabling trustees to exert greater competitive pressure on asset managers. In this session, we explore how trustees can understand, contextualise and ultimately challenge their asset management costs and look at who really benefits from improved cost transparency and how.
